I've always been a fan of technology. More than 3 years ago, I've enjoyed a simple life with family and friends in a 3rd world country. Despite stacking crisis, it didn't bother me much. I got used to the heavy traffic, pollution, various natural calamities, political corruptions, etc. To those coming from other countries, these may seem extreme. But surprisingly, this is actually not the worst to happen in a nation. We are updated on the latest technology, gadgets and innovations but we lack the capability to own such luxury. Not everyone can have the latest iPhone or the best laptop or the most powerful digital camera there is but we actually know how it works and how to use it. Unfortunately, we can't afford it. I was given the chance to move to another country for occupation due to insufficient income generation in my past work. It's the first time I've gone abroad and was looking forward to a new adventure. As a graphic designer, I prepared myself to any challenge I may encounter. Despite the language barriers, I coped with the locals easily and got along with them well. The place was one of the cleanest I've seen. Here, policemen are rarely found and everything is very orderly. Buildings are huge and everyone dressed like fashion gurus. This is truly a place of luxury. But after a few months, I've realized something peculiar about the people I've worked with. Having complete and wonderful things around makes you think that people can work smoothly in a fast-paced office...I was wrong. I guess they were pampered too much to the point that they don't desire to know more. For one, the computers they use? Well, they know how to type, copy, paste & drag. That's it. When mistakes or problems arise, they're at a lose. Troubleshooting? Not in their vocabulary. Next thing I know, they've called the IT specialist. They can't fix their keyboard problems just because they've accidentally pressed NUM LOCK. (O.O) Second, they don't know how to change ink in printers or how to replace waste toners or don't know why the printer won't print. Paper jams? Call the specialist! I tried my hand in self-troubleshooting these equipments and before I knew it, they all come to me for help when these things acted up. Why? Well, a post-it got stuck inside. Gadgets are not the only reason they are stressing over. Intelligence is one thing but street smarts? Ahhh next question please? Work-related problem solving skills are also one of those classes they really have to attend. Seen the problems they're panicking over and it can easily be solved if they were only resourceful enough to think out-of-the-box. It's so ironic how polished people may look on the outside but a bit hollow on the inside. No one is perfect. If you ask me, I'd rather have the inside than the out. ••• |
